Boeansa Temple (Goesan)

충청북도 괴산군 청안면 효근1길 3-8

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

This is a temple located in Cheongan-myeon, Goesan-gun. It is unknown who founded it or when. In the *Dongguk Yeoji Seungnam* (Augmented Survey of the Geography of Korea), it is recorded under the name Suamsa Temple, but in the *Cheongan-gun Eupji* (Cheongan County Gazetteer) compiled during the reign of King Gojong, it is recorded as a ruined temple. It remained a ruined temple site for a long time until 1957, when residents of Hyojae Village below the temple gathered broken pagoda materials to erect a pagoda, excavated a Buddhist statue, built a protective pavilion, and named the temple Boeansa.

Current buildings include the Daeungjeon (Main Hall) and a monks' quarters. The Seated Stone Medicine Buddha (Seokjoyaksayeoraejwasang) enshrined in the Daeungjeon is designated as Chungcheongbuk-do Cultural Heritage Material, and the Three-story Stone Pagoda is designated as a Treasure. Additionally, five other artifacts—a Standing Stone Buddha and five hanging paintings (taenghwa)—are preserved. Nearby, there are many places where local culture and history can be learned, such as the Cheongan Samaso (Cheongan Local Administration Office) and Cheongan Hyanggyo (Confucian School).
