Junipers of Changdeokgung

서울특별시 종로구 율곡로 99 (와룡동)

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

The juniper tree of Changdeokgung is estimated to be about 700 years old, with a height of 12 meters and a root circumference of 5.9 meters. Its branches extend in four directions; the southern branch has been cut, the northern branch is dead, and the eastern branch has grown into a twisted, deformed shape. The tree's form resembles a dragon ascending to the sky. Changdeokgung was built as a royal detached palace in the 4th year of King Taejong of Joseon (1404). It is believed that a large, already-grown tree was planted after the palace was completed, leading to the age estimate of 700 years. This juniper has lived under the care and attention of ancestors for centuries, and due to its high cultural value, it is designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
