Injeongmun Gate of Changdeokgung Palace

서울특별시 종로구 율곡로 99

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Injeongmun Gate (仁政門) is the main gate of Injeongjeon Hall, the main hall of Changdeokgung Palace. Injeongmun Gate was the site where the coronation ceremony of the next king was held during the royal funeral (national funeral) of a king. Several kings of the Joseon Dynasty, including Hyojong, Hyeonjong, Sukjong, Yeongjo, Sunjo, Cheoljong, and Gojong, held their coronation ceremonies here and ascended the throne. The building measures 3 kan (bays) in the front and 2 kan on the sides, and the roof is a hip-and-gable roof shaped like the Chinese character eight (八) when viewed from the side. The decorative brackets (gongpo) supporting the eaves are constructed in the dapo style, with brackets placed between the columns as well. The ceiling inside the building is an exposed-beam ceiling (yeondeung cheonjang) where the ceiling materials are visible, and the dancheong (traditional decorative painting) is done in the most modest style. As the site where the succession ceremony was held, this building, along with the main hall Injeongjeon, best preserves the dignity and formality of the Joseon Dynasty palace. Address: 99 Yulgok-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul
