Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Sangchonjae is a hanok cultural space located on the west side of Gyeongbokgung Palace. It is a space for revitalizing Korean cultural content such as hanbok, Hangeul, and traditional crafts, along with exhibitions promoting the excellence of traditional culture. The Jongno-gu district office purchased a long-abandoned hanok house owned by the National Police Agency, restored it over about a year, and opened it in June 2017. Restored in the style of a late 19th-century traditional hanok, it is regarded as a building that well captures contemporary values within traditional forms.

There is an exhibition space where visitors can experience Korea's unique residential culture and appreciate the excellence of ondol (underfloor heating), and programs are offered to experience various traditional cultures such as hanbok, crafts, and seasonal customs. Representative programs include 'Han Culture at Sangchonjae,' a traditional craft lecture; 'Traditional Food, Clothing, and Shelter Learned in a Hanok,' where visitors can observe and experience Korea's traditional food, clothing, and shelter that change with the four seasons; and 'Sangchonjae Docent,' a commentary program introducing Sangchonjae and explaining old residential culture.
