Baek In-je House

서울특별시 종로구 북촌로7길 16 (가회동)

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Located in Gahoe-dong, Bukchon, Baek In-je House is a representative hanok from the Japanese colonial period that preserves the style of modern hanok. On a site of 2,460㎡ overlooking Bukchon, it features a stately sarangchae (men's quarters) at the center, a spacious anchae (women's quarters), and a large garden, with a modest detached pavilion at the highest point. Baek In-je House maintains the beauty of traditional hanok while embracing modern changes, and in terms of architectural scale and historical value, it is introduced alongside Yun Bo-seon House as a representative building of Bukchon. Built using black pine (heuksong) from the Amnok River, first introduced to Seoul during the 1907 Gyeongseong Exposition, Baek In-je House has several features that distinguish it from typical upper-class houses of the same period. Unlike other traditional hanok that separate the sarangchae and anchae into distinct buildings, these two spaces are connected by a corridor, allowing free movement without going outside. Additionally, the inclusion of Japanese-style corridors and tatami rooms, as well as the extensive use of red bricks and glass windows, reflects the historical context of the time of construction. Another unique feature of Baek In-je House, not found in traditional Joseon-era hanok, is that part of the sarangchae is built as a two-story structure. Baek In-je House, where you can admire the stately sarangchae from the garden, the spacious anchae from the courtyard, and the modest detached pavilion from the rear garden, is a precious cultural heritage that gathers the diverse beauty of Korean hanok in one place.

◎ Travel information to experience the charm of Hallyu - Drama <The Youngest Son of a Conglomerate> The place where Miracle's major shareholder Jin Do-jun and Sunyang Group Chairman Jin Yang-cheol faced each other is 'Baek In-je House,' a representative modern hanok that offers a panoramic view of Bukchon. It is also a house that allows you to imagine the life of the upper class at the time through the sarangchae, anchae, garden, and detached pavilion. The place where Jin Yang-cheol and Jin Do-jun met is the sarangchae, and if you make a reservation for a guided tour, you can also view the interior of this area, so it is recommended to check this out.
