Hyosajeong Pavilion

Hyosajeong is a pavilion located on the southern hill of the Han River bank in Noryangjin-dong, Dongjak-gu, Seoul. It was a villa of Gong Suk-gong Noh Han, who served as Hanseong-buyun (Mayor of Hanseong) and Uuijeong (Second State Councilor) during the reign of King Sejong of Joseon. After his mother passed away, Noh Han built a pavilion on this very site and observed a three-year mourning period at the grave. It is said that he would occasionally ascend the pavilion to miss his mother and look far north to mourn his father, who was buried in Gaeseong.

The name Hyosajeong was given by Gang Seok-deok, a Deputy Minister of the Board of Taxation and Noh Han's brother-in-law. The pavilion measures 46.98㎡, with three front bays and two side bays, featuring a five-beam structure with railings and a hipped-and-gable roof. It was newly built in 1993 on the site where a Japanese colonial-era shrine (Hangang Shrine) once stood. Hyosajeong has long been famous as a symbol of filial piety and boasts the most scenic views among the many pavilions along the Han River. It remains designated as one of Seoul's excellent scenic viewpoints, offering beautiful landscapes to this day.
