Seoul Pungnap-dong Earthen Fortress

Pungnap-dong Earthen Fortress is a flatland fortress built with earth during the Hanseong period of Baekje, shaped like a boat. Currently, the western wall adjacent to the Han River has been lost, leaving only about 2.7 km, but it is estimated to have originally had a total circumference of 3.7 km, making it larger and more magnificent than Goguryeo's Guknae Fortress or Silla's Wolseong Fortress. The initial wall height was 10.8 m, and through two expansions, it was enlarged to a maximum height of 13.3 m. During the great flood of 1925 (Eulchuk year), upper-class artifacts such as a bronze tripod vessel and belt ornaments were excavated, leading to its identification as Hanam Wiryeseong. It was designated as Joseon Historic Site No. 27 in 1936 and has been protected as a National Historic Site since 1963. Inside, remains of early Baekje roads, large pit buildings, tile-roofed buildings, a presumed temple building, and ritual-related artifacts have been confirmed. Since 2000, preservation and restoration have been underway in six zones.
