Why travelers stop here
This house was built by Haepung Buwongun Yun Taek-yeong, the father-in-law of King Sunjong, when his daughter Empress Sunjeong was appointed as Crown Princess in 1906 and entered Changdeokgung Palace. The construction materials were reused from the dismantling of Gyeongungung Palace, and the timber is red pine. Originally located at 224 Jegi-dong, Dongdaemun-gu, it was relocated and restored to this site. The floor plan of the house is shaped like the Korean letter 'won' (元), which is rare in Korea. The 'ㅡ'-shaped shrine is positioned at the head of the 'won' character, situated on the highest ground at the innermost part of the house. In front of it, on a lower terrace to the south, the 'ㅠ'-shaped main building is placed. The structure of the main building consists of the inner quarters and the servant quarters connected in a 'ㅡ' shape, forming the horizontal stroke of 'ㅠ', with the servant quarters extending east and west like arms. The shrine was restored after being destroyed by fire in 1960, and two tiers of stone retaining walls were built in front of it to create a flower bed. The center of the 'won'-shaped plan naturally becomes a courtyard, with walls built along the lines of the eastern and western servant quarters and a single-leaf gate for access to the courtyard. The inner courtyard is accessed through the middle gate of the western servant quarters, while the servant courtyard is accessed through a single-leaf gate in the wall extending from the end of the eastern servant quarters. The roof is a hipped-and-gable tile roof, with the servant quarters having double eaves with brackets and the rest having single eaves. The servant quarters have a three-beam structure and a gable roof. The overall atmosphere of the house is more suited to a ritual house (jaesil) than a residence. Therefore, it has many special features, such as the main hall being placed in the center with the inner room and the guest room facing each other.
