Namsangol Hanok Village

Established in 1998, Namsangol Hanok Village is located on the former site of the Capital Defense Command on the northern side of Namsan Mountain, covering a total area of 79,934 m² (24,180 pyeong). It consists of five hanok (traditional Korean houses), a Traditional Crafts Center, Cheonugak Pavilion, a Traditional Garden, Seoul Namsan Gugakdang (traditional music theater), and the Millennium Time Capsule Square, welcoming citizens and tourists. In the midst of the bustling city center, visitors can experience various activities themed around Korean traditional culture, and along the slopes of Namsan, they can enjoy beautiful scenery created by valleys, pavilions, and various plants designed in traditional landscaping style. At the highest point of the traditional garden, the Seoul Millennium Time Capsule Square was created in 1994 to commemorate the 600th anniversary of Seoul as the capital and to anticipate the 1,000th anniversary 400 years later, burying memories of the era. Entering Namsangol Hanok Village, which restores old houses, you will find Cheonghakji Pond and Cheonugak Pavilion beside it. Passing through Cheonugak Square and climbing the stone steps, you will encounter a nostalgic space where hanoks from various parts of Seoul have been relocated and restored, allowing a glimpse into the lifestyles of people from the past. There are five hanoks in total: the house of Master Carpenter Lee Seung-eop from Samgak-dong, the house of Owijang (Fifth-rank Military Officer) Kim Chun-yeong from Samcheong-dong, the house of the Min family from Gwanhun-dong, the shrine of Haepung Buwongun Yun Taek-yeong from Jegi-dong, and the house of the Yun family from Ogin-dong. Among these, only the house of the Yun family from Ogin-dong, which was too dilapidated to be moved, was restored using new materials, while the other buildings were relocated with their original components intact. Various experiences at Namsangol Hanok Village include trying on hanbok, folding hanji (Korean paper), writing Hangeul, and tasting traditional tea. Traditional etiquette school and oriental medicine experience programs are also operated. On Saturdays and Sundays, traditional weddings are actually held, and traditional wedding experiences are offered. Additionally, at the straw-roofed pavilion opposite Cheonugak, straw craft demonstrations take place, and on the Cheonugak stage, visitors can participate in Taekwondo demonstration performances and experience events. In the Pigeumjeong yard, folk games such as jegichagi (shuttlecock kicking), yutnori (traditional board game), and biseokchigi (stone throwing game) can be enjoyed, providing a fun time for families. Furthermore, traditional cultural heritage interpreters are stationed throughout Namsangol Hanok Village to accompany and explain the sites, offering assistance.
