서울특별시 광진구 능동로 216 (능동) (어린이대공원 내)

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

This statue was erected to commemorate Goha Song Jin-woo, who was an independence activist, educator, journalist, politician, and national leader. It is located inside Seoul Children's Grand Park (between the main gate and the west gate). Goha was imprisoned for masterminding the March 1st Movement. After becoming the president of The Dong-A Ilbo in 1921, he led the domestic independence movement during the dark period of Japanese colonial rule through the newspaper for over 20 years. He promoted national strength and spirit for independence through journalism, education, industry, and cultural activities, with national democracy, people's livelihood, and civil democracy as his fundamental ideologies for national salvation. Just before liberation, he rejected the Japanese offer to take over the government. After liberation, he founded the Korean Democratic Party and, as president of The Dong-A Ilbo, worked for democratic nation-building and against trusteeship. He was shot by Han Hyeon-woo and others at his home in Wonseo-dong, Seoul, where he passed away.
