150-Year-Old Zelkova Tree

서울특별시 양천구 목동중앙본로1길 37 (목동)

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

This is a 150-year-old zelkova tree, serving as a testament that a village existed here before the area was transformed into a large-scale housing complex. Approximately 150 years ago, a resident of the village of Namal (the old name of Mok 4-dong) planted it, and it has survived to the present day. During the Korean War, it was bombed and nearly died, but it overcame various disasters, sprouted new shoots, grew well, and took on its current form. According to local lore, anyone who makes a wish under this tree will have it fulfilled, and damaging it carelessly is said to bring curses and great calamities, so it is revered as a living guardian of the village. This zelkova tree is carefully tended and protected by the residents of Mok 4-dong.
