Site of Sin Seok-gu's Former House

This is the place where Sin Seok-gu, one of the 33 national representatives, lived during the March 1st Movement in 1919. Sin Seok-gu (1875–1950) converted to Christianity in 1907, was baptized the following year, and entered Hyeopseong Theological Seminary to study theology. He worked as an evangelist in Gyeonggi-do and Gangwon-do, and was ordained as a pastor at the Southern Methodist Annual Conference in September 1917. While serving as the senior pastor of Supyogyo Church in Seoul from November 1918, he was persuaded by O Hwa-yeong to participate as a national representative in the March 1st Movement. On March 1, 1919, he read the Declaration of Independence at Taehwagwan, was arrested by Japanese police, and served 2 years and 8 months in prison. In July 1938, he led an anti-Shinto shrine worship struggle and was imprisoned. In May 1945, he was arrested for refusing to participate in the Japanese-forced victory prayer services and hoisting of the Japanese flag, and was in prison when liberation came. On April 19, 1949, he was arrested as the ringleader of the Jinampo Anti-Communist Secret Society incident, imprisoned in Pyongyang Prison, and was killed during the Korean War.
