Suseongdong Valley

서울특별시 종로구 옥인동 185-3 (옥인동)

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Suseongdong Valley is a valley that flows down from Inwangsan Mountain and joins Cheonggyecheon Stream. The sound of the valley's water is loud and clear, which is why the neighborhood was called Suseong-dong (Water Sound Village) during the Joseon Dynasty. It is a place so beautiful that it was included in the 'Jangdong Palgyeongcheop' (Album of Eight Scenic Views of Jangdong), painted by the renowned artist Gyeomjae Jeong Seon, depicting the eight scenic views of Bukaksan and Inwangsan Mountains. It was also introduced as a 'scenic spot' in historical and geographical texts of the Joseon Dynasty such as 『Dongguk Yeojibigo』 and 『Hanseong Jiryak』. Additionally, Prince Anpyeong and Gyeomjae Jeong Seon frequently visited to enjoy Chinese literature and art while overlooking the beautiful Suseongdong Valley. In 1971, the construction of Ogin Sample Apartment caused the loss of its splendid scenery, but 40 years later, the apartment was demolished and the area was designated as a cultural property protection zone, restoring its original beauty. It is a place of great charm where history and nature harmonize, allowing visitors to experience a wonderful forest and a cool valley in the heart of the city. You can see people painting the beautiful scenery of Inwangsan Mountain, and others enjoying a pleasant time soaking their feet in the cool water.
