Dongdaemun Cultural Center

Seoul Dongdaemun-gu is the eastern part of Seoul, a sunrise village, a transportation hub in eastern Seoul, and a place where history and tradition are alive. Dongdaemun-gu, a land with a long history where comb-patterned pottery from the Neolithic Age of the prehistoric era has been excavated, has been a place of the first virtue of 仁 (benevolence), 義 (righteousness), 禮 (propriety), and 智 (wisdom) meaning the east since ancient times, and is a blessed land that was used as the royal farmland Jeonnong (典農) and royal tomb (陵) site due to its even sunlight and wide fields. Dongdaemun Cultural Center, opened in December 1998, is an institution founded with private funds by local figures who gathered their will based on this history and tradition. It organizes local traditional cultural events such as the bustling Dongdaemun-gu May Festival, Chuseok Community Folk Festival, and Cheongnyong Cultural Festival (靑龍文化祭) held annually for residents, and strives to provide cultural enjoyment for local residents by hosting various genres of cultural events such as regular club performances, historical and cultural tours, and literary contests. It serves as a cultural medium as a vanguard for the development of local culture in Dongdaemun-gu, encompassing tradition, history, and modernity.
