Pai Chai Hakdang History Museum is a space where materials and discourses that shed new light on modern Korean history in various fields such as education, religion, politics, society, and culture gather. Pai Chai Hakdang is Korea's first Western-style modern educational institution founded in 1885 by American missionary Henry G. Appenzeller. In 1887, Emperor Gojong bestowed the name 'Pai Chai Hakdang,' meaning 'a house that nurtures and learns useful talents.' The Pai Chai Hakdang East Building, reborn as the Pai Chai Hakdang History Museum in 2008, is a historic modern building completed in 1916. It is the space where Appenzeller practiced holistic education including English classes from the early days, and it is the birthplace of new education and the cradle of new culture, having produced numerous modern intellectuals such as Kim So-wol, Ju Si-gyeong, and Na Do-hyang. The Pai Chai Hakdang History Museum houses precious collections that reveal aspects of modern education, along with a permanent exhibition hall, special exhibition hall, and experience classroom, and it collects and displays materials that shed new light on modern Korean history in various fields.
