Why travelers stop here
Gangbuk-gu, Seoul, where the Museum of Modern and Contemporary History is located, is a sacred place of independence spirit and democracy, home to Bonghwangak, the birthplace of the March 1st Movement, the tombs of patriotic martyrs and independence activists, and the National 4·19 Democratic Cemetery. To properly remember and spread the noble will of the martyrs, the exhibition encompasses our proud history from the Donghak Peasant Movement to the 4·19 Revolution. It conveys that the ideals of 'freedom', 'equality', and 'democracy' are precious values that the martyrs learned and accumulated through blood and sweat, with a moving narrative, aiming to show that 'the country dreamed of by independence activists' and 'the country wished for by the fighters of the April Revolution' are the future vision of the Republic of Korea. It opened in May 2016. New special exhibitions and historical experience programs are held every year.
