Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Ojukheon is a representative historical site in the Gangneung area, famous for its association with Yulgok Yi I, a great scholar of the Joseon Dynasty. Ojukheon is an early Joseon-era building, recognized for its architectural importance and designated as a Treasure in 1963. It is said that Yulgok Yi I was born in the Mongnyongsil (Dream Dragon Room) here. The grounds include Ojukheon, Munseongsa (Shrine), Sarangchae (Guest House), Eojegak (Royal Writings Pavilion), Yulgok Memorial Hall, and Gangneung Municipal Museum. Munseongsa is a shrine enshrining a portrait of Yulgok, and Eojegak is a collection hall for Yulgok's book 'Gyeongmongyogyeol' and the inkstone (Yongyeon) he used in his childhood. Meanwhile, the Yulgok Memorial Hall exhibits Yulgok's writings, posthumous works of Sin Saimdang, and relics of Yulgok's family, including Maechang and Oksan Yi U. Additionally, the city of Gangneung has been holding the Yulgok Festival on October 25 and 26 every year since 1961 to commemorate Yulgok.
