Why travelers stop here
Located in Donghae-myeon, Goseong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, Gujeolsan Mountain is said to have been the home of a Taoist hermit named Gujeol, who could only be met after bowing nine times and calling out nine times. At the foot of Gujeolsan Mountain, Pokpoam was founded next to Gujeol Falls by Monk Hyeongak, a disciple of Monk Ilbong, who established Ilbungsa Temple in Uiryeong. The beautiful scenery of Pokpoam, which clings tightly to the cliff, Gujeol Falls, and the suspension bridge feels mystical. For this reason, Pokpoam has recently become a popular tourist attraction in Goseong visited by many.
On the rock wall next to the main hall of Pokpoam, there is a golden Medicine Buddha rock carving and a rocking rock, a famous spot introduced in various media. A legend tells that a dragon living in Gujeol Falls tried to ascend to heaven but peeked at bathing women; due to this improper conduct, it was struck by lightning from the sky and shattered. Its body became the rock mass surrounding Gujeol Falls, and its severed tail became the rocking rock.
