Guamseowon Site (Guamjeong)

Located in Amsa-dong, Guamseowon was the first Confucian academy in Gucheon-myeon, established in 1667. Local Confucian scholars could build their Confucian knowledge and culture here, take the civil service exam, and become government officials. The Confucian scholars from Gucheon-myeon who were produced here honored Duncheon Yi Jip, and during the reign of King Sukjong, the academy received the royal charter name 'Guamseowon'. It enshrined Yi Jip, Yi Yangjung, Eo Yungyeom, and Im Sukyeong, and had a strong Noron faction orientation. The Confucian scholars organized a village compact centered on the establishment of Guamseowon, forming a Confucian village community. However, Guamseowon disappeared in 1871 during the reign of King Gojong with the nationwide abolition of Confucian academies, and only a commemorative stele remains from 1898. Originally, Guamseowon was built on the site of a rock temple from the Three Kingdoms period, and today Guamjeong has been built to commemorate it.
