Seoul National Cemetery

The National Cemetery is a national cemetery where the spirits of those who sacrificed their lives for the nation and the people are laid to rest. It was established to inter the remains of veterans and to honor their loyalty and righteousness. Seoul National Cemetery is located at the foot of Gwanaksan Mountain, with Gongjakbong Peak as its main peak, surrounded on three sides by the Dongjak ridge like a folding screen, and the Han River flows in front. It was established as a military cemetery in 1955, elevated to a national cemetery in 1965, and the institution name was changed from the National Cemetery Management Office to the National Cemetery on June 1, 1996.

This sacred site of approximately 430,000 pyeong (about 1.42 square kilometers) holds the remains of over 165,000 patriotic martyrs and national heroes, including righteous armies from the late Joseon period, patriots who fought for national liberation, veterans who dedicated their lives to the nation's development and prosperity, and soldiers, police officers, and reservists who died heroically saving the country in times of crisis. The spirits are enshrined in the memorial tablet hall within the Memorial Tower and in the burial grounds, while unknown soldiers are interred in the charnel house. The grounds include the Memorial Tower, Memorial Gate, Loyalty Fountain, Memorial Pond, Memorial Hall, Photo Exhibition Hall, Artifact Exhibition Hall, and parks from each province and city.
