Why travelers stop here
It is the largest multipurpose dam in Korea and a representative tourist attraction in Chuncheon. Completed in 1973, Soyanggang Dam is 123m high, 530m long, and has a storage capacity of 2.9 billion tons, making it so large that the floodgates are not opened for most rains. When the floodgates of Soyanggang Dam are opened, people gather to see the spectacular sight. Even on ordinary days, there are plenty of things to enjoy. The dam top trail, which allows walking on top of the dam, is open to the public. It is a 2.5km round-trip walking path that goes across the dam top to the Palgakjeong Observatory on the opposite side. However, access may be restricted depending on weather conditions. Soyangho Lake, an artificial lake created by the construction of Soyanggang Dam, is magnificent, flowing across Chuncheon, Yanggu, and Inje, and its surrounding scenery is beautiful. From the dock near the dam, you can take a cruise to circle Soyangho Lake or visit Cheongpyeongsa Temple on the opposite side. Between the dam and the dock, there are attractions such as the Soyanggang Dam Water Culture Center, the Soyanggang Dam Completion Monument, and a small statue of the Soyanggang Virgin. On the road leading to the dam, there are many dakgalbi (spicy stir-fried chicken) restaurants and cafes, and cherry blossom trees are abundant, offering another source of enjoyment.
