Maisan consists of two peaks called Ammaibong (687.4m) and Sumaibong (681.1m), along with about ten smaller peaks, and spans the boundary between Danyang-ri, Jinan-eup and Dongchon-ri, Maryeong-myeon. It is composed of the western peak, Mubong (Mother Peak), and the eastern peak, Bubong (Father Peak).
During the Silla period, it was called Seodasan, during the Goryeo period, Yongchulsan, and in the early Joseon period, Sokgeumsan. Currently, it is called Maisan, meaning 'horse ear mountain,' as it resembles a horse's ears.
