Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

According to records, Marananta suffered from an endemic disease while traveling to Baekje, but recovered after drinking water from Umyeonsan Mountain. Consequently, Daeseongchodang was built on Umyeonsan Mountain, which is said to be the predecessor of Daeseongsa Temple. Additionally, the Venerable Baek Yong-seong, one of the 33 national representatives of the March 1st Independence Movement, resided here and participated as a Buddhist representative, leading a Mahayana independence movement. Currently, Daeseongsa Temple houses a wooden seated Buddha statue (Seoul Tangible Cultural Heritage) created by the Venerable Baek Yong-seong.
