Umyeonsan Somang Tower

서울특별시 서초구 서초동 419-3

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Umyeonsan, which forms the border between Seocho-gu, Seoul and Gwacheon-si, Gyeonggi-do, is named for its resemblance to a sleeping cow. As a mountain easily accessible from urban areas such as Umyeon-dong, Seocho-dong, and Yangjae-dong, it sees a steady stream of hikers from early morning until late at night. The slopes are gentle enough that hiking boots are not strictly necessary, making it a particularly popular course for beginner hikers. Most adults can reach the summit, Somang Tower, in just over an hour. Somang Tower on Umyeonsan began as visitors placed stones one by one with their wishes, eventually forming the large stone tower seen today. The observatory near Somang Tower boasts an outstanding view, having been selected as an excellent scenic viewpoint. The night view from here is dazzlingly brilliant, ranking among the best. The area also features various historical sites, including a dolmen from the prehistoric era and Daeseongsa Temple, a Baekje-era Buddhist temple.
