Hongjimun Gate and Tangchundae Fortress

서울특별시 종로구 홍지동 99-7

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Tangchundae Fortress is a defensive wall with a unique structure that demonstrates the capital defense system of the late Joseon Dynasty, built to connect Hanyang's city wall with Bukhansanseong Fortress. It served as a kind of gateway fortress (關門城) that linked the two walls to suit the terrain of the blind spot between the city wall and Bukhansanseong Fortress. The fortress has a circumference of about 4 km, and inside it features Yeonyungdae (鍊戎臺), a military training ground, along with military supply warehouses. The walls are neatly built with uniformly sized square stones, showcasing the construction techniques of King Sukjong's reign.

Hongjimun Gate has a gate tower with 3 front bays and 2 side bays on a stone arch, featuring a hip roof like most city gates. Adjacent to it is the Oghansudaemun water gate, which has 5 arched openings and was used as a water outlet.
