Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Ganwolam is a small hermitage located in Ganwoldo-ri, Buseok-myeon. It is said to have been founded by Great Master Muhak in the early Joseon Dynasty and later rebuilt by Great Master Songmangong. Unlike other hermitages, this mysterious hermitage is connected to land at low tide and becomes an island at high tide, giving the impression of a hermitage floating on water. The natural scenery and the ancient temple, where the spirit of ancestors can be felt, attract a continuous stream of tourists. Additionally, the Gulbureugi Gunwangje (Oyster Calling King Ritual), praying for a bountiful oyster harvest from Ganwoldo, is held every year on the full moon day of the first lunar month at high tide in front of the Eoriguljeot Monument in Ganwoldo-ri. During this event, clean women who have not committed any impure acts dress in white clothes (sobok), dance at the village entrance, and proceed to the oyster monument. There, they set up ritual offerings, hold a prayer ceremony for a good oyster harvest, and offer the harvested oysters to tourists for tasting.
