강원특별자치도 춘천시 서면 신숭겸로 272-21

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

This is the tomb of General Shin Sung-gyeom (Jangjeolgong), a founding contributor of the Goryeo Dynasty. He is the progenitor of the Pyeongsan Shin clan and played a major role in the establishment of Goryeo. In 918, together with Bae Hyeon-gyeong, Hong Yu, Bok Ji-gyeom, and others, he overthrew Gung Ye and supported Wang Geon to found Goryeo. In the 10th year of King Taejo's reign (927), during the Battle of Gong Mountain in Daegu, when King Taejo was surrounded by the forces of Gyeon Hwon of Later Baekje, Shin Sung-gyeom wore the king's clothes and fought the enemy, dying in battle. It is said that King Taejo, to repay Shin Sung-gyeom's sacrifice, had a golden head made for his headless body and held a funeral. To prevent grave robbery, the tomb was built with three burial mounds in one grave. Currently, the tomb area has three mounds along with a memorial stele and tombstone.
