강원특별자치도 춘천시 서면 신매리 68-4

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Gangwon Police Spirit Tower is located in Sinmae-ri, Seo-myeon, Chuncheon-si, Gangwon-do. In front of the tower, the Bukhangang River flows gently, and next to the tower stands a zelkova tree, said to be hundreds of years old, gifted by former President Syngman Rhee. This tower was established to commemorate the spirits of Gangwon police officers who died in action during the Korean War or who died in the line of duty, and to pass on their noble spirit of sacrifice to future generations. It was first erected on Bongui Mountain in Chuncheon. Later, in January 2000, the Gangwon Provincial Police Agency built it at its current location, enshrining a total of 686 individuals: 525 war dead and 161 who died in the line of duty. The tower is a sculpture depicting a police eagle (chamsuri) soaring powerfully into the sky, symbolizing the police force's majesty. Every year, a New Year's ceremony and a memorial rite are held on June 6, Memorial Day, to honor the spirits of fallen police officers.
