Chungnyeoltap (Gangwon)

The Udu Mountain area, where Chungnyeoltap is located, is a historic site where the 6th Division, the parent unit of the Republic of Korea Army's 2nd Corps at the beginning of the Korean War (June 25–28, 1950), joined forces with patriotic Chuncheon citizens to annihilate the main forces of the North Korean 2nd Corps' 2nd and 7th Divisions, which had launched wave attacks using human wave tactics, achieving the only victory on the front lines in the early stages of the Korean War. The North Korean defeat at the battles of Chuncheon and Udu Mountain dealt a critical blow to their plan for a quick conquest, leading to the dismissal of the enemy's 2nd Corps commander, marking it as one of the most brilliant victory records in Korean War history. In particular, during this battle, Chuncheon citizens, student soldiers from the Student Defense Corps, and female workers from a munitions factory transported ammunition and participated in combat alongside ROK soldiers, engaging in a bloody struggle that brought about a shining victory. This not only served as a model for a total civilian-government effort but also elevated the residents' fervent anti-communist patriotism and will to defend freedom to the world. It was built in 1955 by soldiers of the 29th Division of the 3rd Corps to commemorate the fallen heroes of the Korean War, and a memorial ceremony is held every Memorial Day.
