Why travelers stop here
Uibongmun Gate is a structure located in front of the Gangwon Provincial Government at 1 Jungang-ro, Chuncheon-si, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, and is designated as a Tangible Cultural Heritage of Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province. It was built in 1646 along with Joyangru Pavilion when Chuncheon Magistrate Eom Hwang constructed the government office building Munsogak. Later, King Gojong of Joseon ordered the establishment of a detached palace to use Chuncheon as a refuge in times of crisis, and the first Chuncheon Magistrate Kim Gi-seok began the construction. In 1890, the second Magistrate Min Du-ho expanded Munsogak and related facilities, completing the detached palace. In the composition of the detached palace, Uibongmun Gate served as the inner gate of Munsogak, which was the king's sleeping quarters and office. Along with Joyangru Pavilion, it showcases the typical architectural style of government office buildings and holds great historical value as the only remaining structure of the Chuncheon Detached Palace. Munsogak was lost during the Korean War, and as the Gangwon Provincial Government was built on the site of the detached palace, Uibongmun Gate was relocated several times around the provincial government premises. In 2013, it was moved and restored along with Joyangru Pavilion within the Gangwon Provincial Government complex. The calligraphy on the plaque is the work of the late Joseon period master calligraphers Songhaong and Jo Yun-hyeong. The building has a gable roof structure with three front bays and two side bays, preserving the complete form of a raised inner gate typical of inner gates.
