Mokmyeoksan Beacon Fire Station Site

A beacon fire station was a communication method of the past that used torches and smoke to convey urgent news. Signals were sent by lighting fires on high mountains, using smoke during the day and flames at night. The Namsan Beacon Fire Station was established after the capital was moved to Hanyang in the 3rd year of King Taejo of Joseon (1394) and was used for about 500 years until the year after the Gabo Reform. It is also called 'Mokmyeoksan Beacon Fire Station' after the old name of Namsan, or 'Gyeong Beacon Fire Station' because it was in Seoul. Normally, one fire was lit; when an enemy appeared, two; when the enemy approached the border, three; when they crossed the border, four; and when fighting with friendly forces at the border, five fires were lit. The Namsan Beacon Fire Station served as a central beacon station where signals from across the country arrived, playing an important role. It is said that there were five stations from east to west, but currently, the beacon fire station is gone and only the site remains. Since there are no transmitted records, the exact location cannot be confirmed, but one station was restored based on comprehensive related materials such as the 'Cheonggudo' map.
