Samunsa Temple (Chuncheon)

Samunsa Temple is a Buddhist temple located in Hupyeong-dong, Chuncheon-si, Gangwon-do, and is a branch temple of the Cheontae Order of Korean Buddhism in the Chuncheon area. Situated at the foot of Bonguisan Mountain, a sacred mountain of Chuncheon, it is a temple built in the city center with convenient transportation, making it easily accessible to anyone. Samunsa Temple began when devoted Buddhists organized a congregation and started in a rented room in Seoksa-dong, and over about 30 years, it has continuously developed, opening a new horizon as a central center for Buddhist propagation in Gangwon-do. Taking the form of a comprehensive Buddhist hall, Samunsa Temple has four floors above ground: the first floor houses a kindergarten, the second floor has the temple administrative office and a large lecture hall, the third floor features a tea ceremony room, a medium-sized hall, a choir room, and monks' quarters, and the fourth floor is a Dharma hall that can accommodate about 2,000 people. Samunsa Temple operates a one-night, two-day Templestay program, and those wishing to participate can apply through the Samunsa Temple website. Additionally, the Chuncheon Geumgang Buddhist College was established in 1982 as a Buddhist liberal arts college to nurture Buddhist talent, and it continuously recruits new students for both Buddhists and the general public. Samunsa Temple has also established itself as a communication space for local residents by holding regular Dharma services and local cultural events. The exotic architectural style that exquisitely blends tradition and modernity, along with the beautiful garden centered around a pond, provides visitors with another source of inspiration.
